How To Make Play-Doh

Play-Doh-Thumbnail

How To Make Play-Doh:

My kids go through play-doh like crazy, so we started making our own play-doh at home.

I love spending time in the kitchen with my kids, and this allows us to get creative in the kitchen in other ways than baking cupcakes.

My kids have a blast making play-doh in vibrant colors of the rainbow.

This is not only a great way to save money, it also allows you to use that flour (or) food coloring that is about to expire.  😉  Win…Win!

Try it out and let me know how it turns out by sharing your picture and tag it #Play-DohFUN in social media so I can check them out.

Play-Doh Recipe:

Directions:

Using a small pan on Low heat add in the following ingredients and mix continuously for 2-3 minutes.  I like using whisk to mix but you can also use a wooden spoon.

Ingredients:

1 cup of water

1 cup of Flour

½ teaspoon of table salt

2 teaspoon of cream of tartar

2 tablespoon of Vegetable oil

Mix until the flour starts to cook and thicken.  (Mixture will be fairly wet.  Don’t worry!  We will thicken it up by adding flour after mixing in the color)

Coloring:

Divide your play-doh mixture in to paper cups for each color you’d like to create.  I roughly use 2 tablespoon of mixture in each cup.

This is where the Starbucks coffee stirring sticks come in handy!  😉

Using stirring stick (or) butter knife mix in the desired food coloring in each cup.  Be sure to use clean stirring stick / butter knife for each cup to keep color clean.  I like using Gel Neon Food Coloring from Michael’s.  Their colors are so A-mazing and vibrant!

Once you have the color mixed thoroughly, start adding flour until dough becomes thick and play-doh consistency.

Have a sparkle lover in the house?  No problem!  Add any color glitter directly in to the play-doh.  You can find them in all colors at the Dollar Store.

HOT Tip:

Don’t throw away your old Play-doh containers.  You can use it to store your homemade play-doh in it.  Or simply use old fashioned zip lock bags.  🙂

This is such a simple yet fun DIY project.

Simple Dinner Recipe

Simple Chicken Dinner - Kid Approved

Simple Dinner Recipe your Family will Love!

It’s so hard to cook healthy meals when we are depleted in energy and exhausted from running around managing all of our responsibilities.

Cooking healthy meals doesn’t have to be hard or time consuming.

I want to share with you one of my go-to simple recipes that is packed with protein and veggies…but most importantly – kids approved!

It is so simple!  You literally toss it in a pan and throw it in the oven.

Below is the recipe. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments below.

I hope you like this recipe as much as my family does. 😉

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ lbs. Chicken with skin
  • 4 gold potatoes (for more fiber and healthier choice use sweet potatoes)
  • 4 tomatoes
  • ¼ cup of fresh oregano
  • 1 onion
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Carrots (if you like your carrots crunchy like we do – leave them un cut)
  • Sliced lemons and ½ of lemon juice (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Use a large pan you can place in the oven directly.

Cut all the veggies (potatoes, tomatoes, onion) into small size. Keep the sizes the same so they cook evenly.

Toss them into the pan.

Season with Salt and Pepper (1/2 teaspoon salt) and desired amount of pepper.

Coat veggies with generous amount of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and toss it together.

Place the chicken on top of the veggies skin side up!

(Optional) Sliced lemons on top of the chicken for garnish and squeeze 1/2 of lemon juice.

Toss it in the oven 450 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour (depending on your oven and the size of your chicken)

Serve with a salad on the side.

That is it! … So simple! … So Delicious!

Now I’d love to hear from you.  What’s your favorite go-to simple dinner recipe?

Banana Bread Muffins with a Healthy Twist

Time get smart with WHAT we cook, HOW we cook it and WHEN we cook it.

 Banana Bread

There is nothing worse than wasting your hard earned money on ingredients that go bad simply because you or your family didn’t eat it fast enough.

My family LOVES fruit and we stock up on it all the time.  I call fruit my “Healthy Fast Food”.  I love that you can just “grab and go” and it’s great for you!

Bananas are a must-have fruit in our household. We started to buy extra bananas because our kids love them so much and between the four of us, we polish them up so fast.

My husband Anthony and I sometimes would leave the last few bananas “just in case” the kids wanted to eat them.

Of course, Murphy’s Law – for some odd reason that would be the week none of the kids happened to want any bananas.  It would drive me “Bananas” to see them turn brown and get tossed away.

There is nothing worst then seeing your hard earned money go straight to garbage.

So I got smart about how to properly utilize over ripe bananas and put them to use in a healthy way.

Here is one recipe that specifically calls for over ripe bananas.

I LOVE this recipe!  It’s easy… simple… and kid friendly.

In fact, when I see the bananas turn brown I make an event out of it by getting the kids involved in the fun as we bake together.

Quality time with kids “Check!…check and check!”

Baking with Amanda

Here is a recipe you will LOVE!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar (sometimes I will intentionally put a little less to reduce sugar intake)
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • Flaxseed meal (optional) – I like putting 2-4 tablespoons of Flaxseed to add an extra goodness and make it even healthier. It will change the consistency of the batter.  My recommendation is to individually add in to some of the muffin tins and see if you like it before you mix it in the entire batter.

TIP:  You can custom add walnuts, raisins, cranberries etc. in individual muffin tins like you see below vs. the entire batter.

This way everyone in the household can enjoy to their liking.  😉

Banana Bread 2

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place muffin cups in muffin tin, or grease with a little butter.

  1. Mix sugar, oil, and egg until creamy and light yellow.
  2. Add bananas and walnuts. (recipe works great if you decide to leave the walnuts out as well – my kids are not big fans of walnuts)
  3. Add flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until completely smooth.
  4. Spoon the batter into the muffin tin. (I like using ice cream scooper – keeps the sizes consistent)
  5. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until toothpick poked in center muffin comes out clean.

HOT TIP:  They are great for on the go breakfast and as a snack in kid’s lunch box!

My kids who are 6 and 4 LOVE them!

Enjoy!
